Growing up, Debra’s father’s job transferred the family several times, mostly along the coast, where she developed a love for the ocean and coastal scenes. There is a spiritual connection to the land as she paints, intuitively reacting to what she sees and feels. Through the use of field studies and photos, she can easily recall the light, sounds and smells of the day which helps to create a sense of place in her larger paintings. Always striving to learn, she follows weekly life drawing and painting on location sessions as she continues to challenge herself.
Debra was most recently accepted into the 27th National Oil Painters of America Exhibition, and her painting “The Crossing” won the Best Building in a Landscape award in the June/July 2017 PleinAir Salon competition. In addition, her painting, “Boat Jam” was accepted into the Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Exhibition 2017, and “ Christmas Shoppers” was accepted into American Impressionists Society Small Works Show 2016, and she is one of Pastel Journals December 2016 issue, 10 Artists to Watch. She has had paintings accepted into OPA 2016 Salon, ASMA Seventeenth National, the Oil Painters of America 25th National Juried Exhibition, Southeastern Pastel Society 17th International, American Impressionist Society 16th National Exhibition, WPSE Fifth Annual Exhibition 2016, American Society of Marine Artists Regional and National, the American Women Artists 2015 National Juried Exhibition and one into Oil Painters of America Juried Salon Show of Traditional Oils at Beverly McNeil Gallery in Birmingham, AL in October. She has recently been accepted as a Signature Member of American Society of Marine Artists.
Debra teaches weekly classes at Chastain Art Center and conducts her own workshops a few times a year locally and along the coast.
